After Early Access, the action RPG Torchlight 3 is preparing for full launch. Early Access began in June and will end on October 13.
Despite the short Early Access period, the road to launch has been a bit meandering: after Torchlight's original studio, Runic, closed its doors, Echtra Games has been working on a shared world RPG based on the series, Torchlight Frontiers, and was originally slated for release in 2019. It was delayed until this year, and Echtra announced some major changes in January, rebranding it as Torchlight 3 and bringing it closer to the first two games.
In June, Chris said that while the new classes, like steam-powered robots, were fun, the rest of the game felt like a step backward, removing attributes and reducing the number of skills and how much you could develop your character. Take a look at his Torchlight 3 Early Access impressions.
There have been many changes since we last saw it, including reworking relics and fleshing out to appropriate subclasses. Chris feels that relics are too interchangeable and this seems to have been reflected in player feedback, so Echtra has overhauled the system.
Torchlight 3 will close Early Access on October 13 at 7 a.m. PDT/3 p.m. BST; the price will increase to $40 on Steam.
