Baldur's Gate 3 is coming out soon, but since we're still trying to wrap our heads around it, Larian released a full list of races, subraces, classes, and subclasses available for creating the perfect Forgotten Realms adventurer on October 6.
There are eight races to choose from in the Early Access version, most of which come with subraces, for a total of 16 options. I went back to "Divinity: Original Sin 2" a while ago and was very impressed to see the dramatic improvement in fidelity of the character creation screen. This time around, Larian has gone for photorealism, and each head is based on a 3D scan of an actor or model. There are 16 races of 150 heads to choose from.
This time it was more important to make the characters look realistic because of the cinematic dialogue. While the original Sin 2 remained isometric, Baldur's Gate 3 has more camera options and more close-up shots. Look at this handsome young dwarf.
Here's a list of all the races and subraces available on day one:
As for classes, Baldur's Gate 3 offers six classes, allowing you to create a cleric, fighter, ranger, rogue, warlock and wizard. Each class has at least two subclasses for further specialization. I have no idea what I'll choose for the first Early Access, but thanks to this build description, Larian is definitely tempted by the Beast Master Ranger: "A mage who tames beasts and a halfling ranger who uses poison frogs as messengers." Yes, please.
Here's the full list:
These initial choices partially determine how people will react to you as well as what you will become while slaughtering goblins and exploring strange caves. Additionally, there are origins, which allow you to play as a character with more elaborate backgrounds, personal quests, and unique hooks. At the moment, they are all associated with specific classes, like the blood-sucking elf vampire Asterion is a rogue, but that is subject to change. At the start of Early Access, you cannot play as an origin character, but you can meet five characters and recruit them as companions.
This is just a taste of what's in store for Baldur's Gate 3 when it launches next week, and Larian has confirmed that more races and classes will be added to the already robust list. If you want to play a gnome illusionist-and some of you don't-you'll just have to wait.
Until then, read our more detailed guide to the classes and races in Baldur's Gate 3 to help you choose your first character.
