Wraiths Nerfed in Apex Legends Cross-Play Beta Update

Today, Apex Legends launched Aftermarket, a two-week collection event. While the feature is still in beta, PC players of Apex Legends will be able to meet their console-owning peers in-game for the first time. Cross-play has always been a popular request for online multiplayer games that can be played on multiple platforms, but the new feature in Apex Legends is not the only one.

More controversial than the cross-play beta was the news that Wraith has been nerfed, which appeared as part of the aftermarket patch notes. In the past, Wraith's distinctive running style (affectionately referred to by players as "Naruto running") had given her an unexpected advantage. Her hunched posture made her even just a small hitbox smaller, making her a particularly difficult character to tackle as a moving target. In the latest patch, her running style has been significantly changed to a more general one, which, as the developers put it, "makes her more upright and exposes a wider area of her body to gunfire."

The Apex Legends team regretted letting go of Lace's unique running animation, but were concerned that there was no longer a way to balance the character: "We know her old sprint was iconic and , hate that we haven't seen it as well, but we think this is by far the best way to bring her back into line without hitting her abilities again." There may be a silver lining for Wraith Maine, however. The developers are considering bringing power back to her previously nerfed abilities if her new running style proves to be balanced enough. No promises yet, though.

The team also offered a small teaser as to what future updates might include: answering fan questions on Twitter, design director Jason McCord confirmed that the introduction of a real-time damage meter is "on the list."

This feature will allow players to track the progress of their damage badges, and while it's not a universally popular move, it seems to have received more support from the Apex Legends community than the latest changes to Wraith. Of course, no time scale for implementation has been given, so the knowledge that real-time damage measurements are forthcoming should satisfy players for now.

The Apex Legends Aftermarket event runs through October 20 and features 24 unique limited-time cosmetics.
