Phasmophobia, a terrifying online cooperative ghost hunting game, is Twitch's latest surprise hit.

If you're looking for a true-to-life ghost hunting experience this Halloween without having to face the true horror of leaving your home, Phasmophobia is the perfect game for you. The latest Twitch streaming star and one of the most watched games today, Phasmophobia allows you and three friends to hunt spooky ghosts, hauntings, and demonic-aged twits.

Developer Kinetic Games' Phasmophobia is currently streaming to more viewers than Call of Duty: Warzone, Genshin Impact, and Along Us, with an average weekly audience of over 80,000 ( according to Twitch Tracker). This is close to FIFA 21's viewership, but why is this online co-op so quickly rising to the top of the charts?

Perhaps it is because the game is simply better at "scaring" people. In this game, players infiltrate a variety of locations, from haunted houses to spine-tingling schools, and make use of ghost hunting paraphernalia: EVPs, spirit boxes, black lights, and more to help find clues to paranormal spirits that may be living within the walls.

As locations change, so do ghosts. Sometimes they are ghosts, sometimes they are terrifying demons that just want to hurt you. Your job is to face your fears, use all of your senses and tools to figure out which paranormal poltergeist you are dealing with, and get in the van and get away in a big hurry.

And since this is a fully VR-enabled title, ghosts can appear before your very eyes. Fantastic.

But perhaps the most innovative feature is the built-in voice recognition. Visitors from the other side will not only know when you are talking to a fellow ghost hunter, but they will also hear important words and phrases. Some tools may require you to ask the spirit for a sign, as seen on cheesy ghost hunting shows, and demonic energies in particular may get angry when you call them by name.

I have briefly tried this game myself; I put a VR headset on my roommate and poked him in head first. All I can say from my brief experience is that the game is terrifying, spooky, surprisingly deep, and just a little rough around the edges in VR. at $13.99, it's perfect for this Halloween.
