Library employee suspected of stealing $1.3 million in printer toner.

Not every heist is a glamorous, action-packed affair that brings velvet bags filled with diamonds, expensive paintings sold to dubious collectors, and men in ski masks rappelling down the sides of high-rise buildings. Sometimes it is a quiet activity that lasts for years and involves printer toner, video games, and at least one robot vacuum cleaner.

Case in point: an Austin Public Library employee was indicted by a grand jury for stealing printer toner from the library and selling it online for a profit. The profits were enormous: from 2007 to 2019, Randall Whited, an employee in charge of purchasing equipment for the library, allegedly ordered $1.5 million worth of printer toner for the library and stored most of it in his garage so he could sell it online.

"Based on an analysis of the purchases and the actual APL toner requirements, it appears that Whited stole more than $1.3 million in toner," the 72-page report released by the City of Austin's auditor states.

Auditors said the toner the library expected to purchase over 12 years should have been about $150,000.

Auditors were tipped off about the long-term printer toner robbery in March 2019, at which point they began investigating receipts, purchase documents, and even video footage that appears to show Whited moving boxes of toner from the library to his personal vehicle. Whited was indicted in September and has a hearing this month on the theft charge.

The report also alleges that Whited used 10 library credit cards to make personal purchases, spending about $18,000 to buy VR headsets, gear, video games, drones, and robot vacuums. It's everywhere.
