Microsoft is testing Windows 10 setup screens.

Microsoft is testing Windows 10 setup screens.

Some of the things included in a new installation of Windows 10 are fluff, like certain Start menu tiles and programs you may not be interested in using. Microsoft is looking into the idea of an initial setup screen where you can choose how you want to use your PC in order to customize Windows 10 to the actual interests of the user. One of these is "Gaming."

There are six categories in total, the others being Family, Creativity, Schoolwork, Entertainment, and Business. Each has a broad description. For example, the "Games" category says, "Play games, discover, and follow new releases," while the "Schoolwork" category says, "Take notes, write essays, and collaborate on projects."

Microsoft is not 100 percent committed to adding an optional setup screen to the Windows 10 installation routine and is "exploring" that possibility.

"Based on feedback, we are considering adding a page to Windows Setup (OOBE) to better understand how you plan to use your device and help you customize it for your intended use," Microsoft Microsoft stated.

At this early stage, selecting one or more customization categories will not do much. According to Microsoft, Insider may see different options during Windows setup depending on which boxes are checked, but after finishing Windows setup, the actual settings will not make a difference. This is a bit odd, since the "Windows Setup" screen is not a very good way to set up Windows.

Therefore, it is also not entirely clear how the different category designations affect Windows 10. The only thing specifically related to the "Game" option would be that GPU scheduling with hardware acceleration would be enabled by default and game mode would be turned on. But beyond that, who knows.

In the grand scheme of things, this seems to indicate that Microsoft understands that a one-size-fits-all approach to Windows 10 is probably not the best way to go. Other than announcing a gaming-specific version of Windows 10 (Windows 10 Gaming Edition), this may be the next best thing.
