PlayStation 5 supports standard PC-sized NVMe M.2 SSDs.

PlayStation 5 will support M.2 SSDs up to 2280, Sony has confirmed in a recent teardown video, and while details on which of the best NVMe SSDs for PCs will fit into the next-generation console are still unclear, at least support for standard sizes We have confirmed that at least the standard sizes are supported.

NVMe SSDs come in several sizes, but most PC builders will only know of one size, the 2280. smaller sizes like the 2260 and 2240 are often used in compact laptops and less often in desktops.

Sonny is not a fan of the 2280.

Sony announced in its initial tech brief that the PS5 would have expandable storage, but has since refrained from encouraging users to purchase NVMe SSDs in preparation for the November 12 (or November 19) launch date.

This has long been thought to be due to the size mismatch between the most common M.2 NVMe SSDs and those supported by the PS5. However, Sony's recently posted teardown of the PS5 confirms otherwise, clearly showing a single NVMe M.2 expansion slot supporting up to 2280 and the most common keys (there are also different keys and connector configurations for M.2 SSDs, but really not much (There is no need to).

But while we have all the information we need about the size, we still don't know why Sony would make us wait to get an additional storage drive for the PlayStation 5. Perhaps it is a firmware issue that requires a little extra work on the part of the SSD manufacturer to ensure compatibility. Sony uses a custom-made SSD controller chip for high bandwidth, so it may require a bit more work to make standard SSDs compatible. We should also remember that PCIe 4.0 bandwidth will very likely be part of that requirement. [But at least there is hope that a spare PC drive might be useful to augment the internal PS5 SSD of 825GB (which might be 664GB with system reservations).
