EA took an unusually low-key approach to Star Wars: Squadrons. No microtransactions, no last-minute progression systems, or anything else typical of live-service games. And now that it's on sale, there seem to be no plans to exploit it.
Speaking to UploadVR earlier this week, creative director Ian Frazier explained that EA Motive wanted to create a straightforward game that was complete upon launch, rather than stretching it across updates, seasons and DLC.
"Never say never, but our philosophy is that we are not trying to treat the game as a live service. Our philosophy is we are not trying to treat the game like a live service. So we tried to treat it with the old-fashioned approach of, 'You pay $40, this is the game, and it's completely self-contained. We have no plans to add any more content, this is the game and we hope you understand its value proposition."
The fact that it is not a live-service game was emphasized well before launch, but given the variety of aliens and locations packed into the Star Wars universe, it is surprising that EA Motive has not tapped them for new cosmetics or further maps.
It should be nice that the game will be released with everything you need so you can just buy it and never have to dip your hand into your bank account again, but on the other hand I want more stuff. I'm greedy. All the unlockable cosmetics are plain and I will eventually start to get bored with the maps, but when that happens I think I'll just move on. What a novel idea to get bored with a game.
