Marvel's "Avengers" lost many players, but Crystal Dynamics is confident they will return.

Most live-service games, whether they have a phenomenal launch like "Fall Guys" or a stinker like "Anthem," begin to experience a player exodus. While a drop in popularity is not necessarily a signal of trouble, "Marvel's Avengers" is beginning to look like a ghost town on the PC.

After a very entertaining campaign, there is quite a lot to do on the surface. There are iconic missions for each hero, new types of missions you didn't face in the campaign, new conspiracies to foil from AIM, and lots of grinding. But the new missions are gone quickly, and regardless of the type of mission, you just go around smashing robots and AIM goons.

Finding players is getting harder, too: according to Steam Charts and SteamDB, the number of concurrent PC players regularly hovers in the 1,000s, and people are sticking to playing with bots. While the majority of the Avengers Initiative can be enjoyed solo, missions are much smoother when played in a group.

More heroes and missions are on the way, but Crystal Dynamics has yet to offer an actual date. When it does, we hope there will be a revival, but we are concerned that it sounds like there is a time lag and urge people to wait until there is a mountain of new elements to enjoy.

In a statement sent to Kotaku, studio head Scot Amos detailed some of the impending additions, though he was vague about dates. He said, "In the coming weeks, Avengers players will get a new warzone mission type, the Tachyon Rift, new outposts like the Helicarrier and Ant-Man's base (which will serve as bases for future missions), and a high-level assault on AIM's cloning lab.

Prior to the launch, Crystal Dynamics revealed the first two additional heroes, the Hawkeyes, but no date has been set for their appearance. Kate Bishop will appear in Operation: while Clint Barton will make his debut in a two-part operation, which Amos says will appear in the "near future."

The two Hokies are a pretty good reason to return, promising new villains and more storylines. But launching and maintaining a new live service game while also getting used to working from home definitely makes the development schedule less predictable.

"By adding exciting late-stage content and demonstrating our continued focus on improving the game, we are confident that PC players (as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players) will return to the game," Amos told Kotaku He told Kotaku.

CrystalDynamics plans to share more details in an upcoming blog post next week, as well as a "community communication initiative" that will give players more ways to stay informed.
