John Romero Says Doom Guy's Name is Doom Guy

Today is the 26th anniversary of the release of Doom 2, so John Romero took to Twitter to share some trivia and answer some burning questions that many people wanted to know the answers to. I wasn't one of them, and in fact, I can't guarantee that many people wanted to know the answer, but I think at least one did. But I think at least one did.

Now we know: "Doom Guy's name is Doom Guy. John Romero made "Doom," so unless the other John has an opinion, it is correct.

Finally, we know that his name is Doom Guy, not Doom Guy. Actually, now that I think about it, this is still complicated. Guy is a Germanic surname common in France and England after the Norman Conquest. So is Doom a first name? It could be an abbreviation for Adoum, Doumanic, or something else. Since Doom Guy might have the surname Guy instead of Guy, does that mean we cannot use the masculine pronoun for Doom Guy?

Doom Guy has many aliases: in the 90s there was a Doom novel and Doom Guy was named Flynn Taggart, there was a Doom 3 novel and Doom Guy was named John Kane. In the Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal games, Doom Guy is just called "Doom Slayer," which is a title rather than a name, so it is safe to call him Doom Guy.

In any case, the first DLC for Doom Eternal is called The Ancient Gods, Part One, a stand-alone expansion that will be released on October 20.
