American McGee almost brought 300-foot zombies to "Quake"

Sandy Petersen, one of the original four level designers for the 1996 classic Quake, reminisced a bit about it on Twitter today. Specifically, about the lack of boss monsters in Quake episodes 2 and 3. Petersen explained that he and American McGee tried to fill that gap with creativity. They just... . just took an existing monster model and scaled it up to a huge scale.

This idea was ultimately nixed by the art team; McGee wanted to create a level centered around a giant 300-foot zombie that required players to climb lifts, stairs, and scaffolding to take out its weaker parts. Says Petersen, "It was a neat level, but the art team refused."

Petersen's own contribution to the giant boss is a huge vore, in which players must fight a guerrilla war to avoid bullets that seek in the cave. Instead, the boss in Episode 2 is just a vore. This is his first appearance. There will be more later.

American McGee and Sandy Petersen were quite well known in the PC gaming world in the 1990s. At the time they were making games at id, Inc. Petersen later created the Age of Empires series at Ensemble Studios. He has returned to his first favorite tabletop game in the last decade. After his work at id, American McGee created his namesake game, American McGee's Alice, and is now an indie creator of games.

Anyway, I will spend the rest of the day thinking about this dreamboat: ...... But bigger:
