Hard drives may not be as popular as they once were, but when it comes to storing large amounts of data inexpensively, they're still the best option for those who want to store their entire Steam collection offline (or install Call of Duty a few times). Western Digital has slashed the price of its 12TB external hard drive to just $174.99. And you don't even need to subscribe to Amazon Prime.

This external drive connects to your PC via USB, but requires a separate adapter for power (included); it is preformatted in NTFS for Windows, but can be reformatted to any file system you like. According to customer reviews, the disk is 5,400 rpm and has a maximum transfer rate of about 90-100 MB/s via USB.

If you decide later (or soon) that you want to build the drive into your PC, it is very easy to take the internal SATA drive out and put it into your PC. There are various tutorials online on this process, but usually all you need to do is remove the plastic shell and unscrew the drive. This may sound odd, since most 12TB internal drives sell for around $200-300 (depending on speed), but buying this external drive and removing the HDD inside is cheaper than buying a 12TB drive designed for internal use.
