Sony's Prime Day TV Sale Offers Great Opportunity to Upgrade to OLED for Gaming

I applaud Vizio for making its first foray into OLED TVs this summer at an aggressive price point. At the time I foresaw an era of more affordable prices for OLED TVs in general. At least on Prime Day today, that seems to be coming to pass. In particular, Sony's excellent A8H series is being heavily discounted right now, with both the 55- and 65-inch models at record low prices.

Starting with the 55-inch model (XBR55A8H), Amazon has it marked down to $1,298. This is $200 less than the previous lowest price, which fell briefly in September, and well below the usual $1,900 price tag. Not coincidentally, this sale price is slightly less than Vizio's 55" OLED TV.

The folks at Rtings gave the A8H series an overall score of 8.7 (out of 10), noting that it "delivers amazing picture quality for any type of content and is a pretty decent upgrade over the previous model." It is also a "significant upgrade" in terms of gaming performance alone, due to "great low input lag" in game mode.

If a larger size is desired, the 65-inch model (XBR65A8H) sells for $1,798. The lowest price to date is about $2,300, and they usually sell for $2,800. In other words, it is another significant discount.

These are both Sony's newest models (2020) and are powered by the same X1 Ultimate processor as their 8K TVs. They are also Android TVs, which means they have a built-in Chromecast and can be controlled by voice using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

So what are the caveats? Burning is always a risk with OLEDs, and these are the latest models, but they lack HDMI 2.1 connectivity and variable refresh rate (VRR) support. Otherwise, however, these models are excellent overall OLED displays at an unprecedented price point.
