Amnesia A Machine for Pigs" and "Kingdom New Lands" now available for free on Epic Store

Another Thursday has come and gone this week. This week it's first-person creep-out Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Kingdom New Lands, a standalone remake/expansion of the 2015 medieval management game.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, developed by The Chinese Room, is a different kind of experience than its predecessor, The Dark Descent. Mechanically, it is very similar, but it is more creepy and strange than horror, and the loss of the sanity mechanic makes it more of an exploration game; it was not as well received as "The Dark Descent" (although we liked it a lot), but it was not least because it is not the overtly screaming game that players have come to expect. It will be interesting to see what the reaction is now that it is free and far enough removed from TDD that the weight of expectation is not so heavy.

(Speaking of Amnesia, the next game in the series, Amnesia: Rebirth, will be released on October 20.)

In Kingdom Newland, you play as a shipwrecked monarch, collecting coins from a 2D map, hiring farmers, building forts and monsters that attack you nightly. As I noted in my review of the original version in 2015, it starts off easy but doesn't last long. You will die many times, but hopefully you will learn from the experience and do better next time.

Both Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Kingdom New Lands are free to play until October 22. After that, the Epic Games store will deliver two more themed games for Halloween: Double Fine's Costume Quest 2 and the first-person horror game Layers of Fear 2. And if you're looking for the best free PC games, or for games that are now free for a limited time only, we've got you covered.
