Ten Years After Launch, StarCraft 2 Development Comes to an End

Ten years after its release, Starcraft 2 has dominated the RTS scene. There just hasn't been much competition. the RTS genre has fallen on hard times, but Starcraft still seems to exist in a bubble where people want to gobble up resources and bash small units together. blizzard has built a successful esport around this game and has been updating it for years. After years of updates, things are finally coming to a head.

Blizzard has announced that development of new small items like military funds and commanders has been completed. Balance modifications and support through seasonal rolls will continue, but no new items will be available for purchase. [Executive Producer Rob Breidenbecker said, "We intend to continue to support StarCraft II in the same way we have supported previous long-standing games like Brood War, with our core and competitive communities most interested in Our primary focus is on the things that our core and competitive communities are most interested in."

Blizzard released a balance patch a few months ago and has no plans to release another patch this year.

Naturally, this is not the real end of one of Blizzard's biggest series. The changes seem to allow the team to think about what's next for both "StarCraft 2" and the "StarCraft" universe; Bridenbecker calls StarCraft "the core of Blizzard." And look at the length of its active development time compared to, for example, Heroes of the Storm, which Blizzard began scaling back in 2018, just a few years after launch.
