Developer of "Cyberpunk 2077" Receives Death Threats for Delay

Yesterday, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 would have one last delay, and despite going gold in September, the developer apparently felt that it needed a few more weeks to bring the current and next-gen versions of the game all the way to scratch.

Sadly, albeit predictably, this led to a lot of flak directed at individual developers, with senior game designer Andrzej Zawadzki reacting to the "unacceptable" death threats on Twitter.

Much of the motivation for the accusations stems from the idea that CD Projekt misled fans with promises not to reschedule the game. One tweet in particular was an unfortunately-timed reply to a fan who assured him a day before yesterday's announcement that there would be no further delays.

Of course, companies are nothing special; Fabian Mario Döhla (who posted this promise under the handle @CyberpunkGame) explained in his reply that the delay was not free knowledge at the time of his post, leading to the unfortunate assurance.

"I mean, we are a publicly traded company and it is almost impossible to tell every employee in advance," Döhla tweeted. 'Mainly for legal reasons. Simply put, CP Twitter did not intentionally lie. We simply did not know. Apologies."

According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, most CDPR employees apparently first learned of the delay in an internal email sent at the same time as the public delay announcement. The reason, apparently, was that "stock restrictions prevented us from breaking this news earlier."

The studio is reportedly already scrambling to release the game this winter (despite previously promising not to), and the 21-day delay will likely only mean even longer weeks for the studio's developers. Threatening emails from disgruntled fans will not make this situation any easier.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently set for release on December 10.
