Corsair purchases application that turns iPhone into PC-compatible webcam.

Corsair has acquired EpocCam, a company that specializes in turning Apple iPhones into PC-compatible webcams; EpocCam will become part of Elgato and, along with the already available Cam Link 4K, will add one more webcam technology to the streaming peripheral company's portfolio Webcam technology will be added to the streaming peripheral company's product line, along with the already available Cam Link 4K.

Elgato is a subsidiary of Corsair and, with the exception of webcams, offers almost everything needed for a home streaming setup. The company offers Cam Link 4K, which connects a PC to a DSLR, camcorder, or GoPro.

Still, the EpocCam acquisition will certainly bolster the company's video capture options: the EpocCam app lets you connect your iPhone to your PC and use it as an input device; EpocCam lets you use it as a mainstream camera or As a secondary angle, the iPhone can be connected to the PC.

EpocCam is for Apple App Store and iOS devices only. This means Android users will not be able to use this successfully. That's definitely a bummer for those rocking high-end Android devices with a big chunk of lens on the back.

Still, now that EpocCam has Corsair's backing, there is hope for broader cell phone support. The press release states, "More exciting updates to EpocCam are already in development."

The EpocCam app is not the only one integrating with Elgato. Sami Grohn, the developer and lead developer of the app, has also joined Elgato as a principal software engineer. In other words, the company probably has the expertise to make changes if Elgato so desires. [The purchase of the app joins other acquisitions such as Elgato and controller maker Scuf Gaming.

The amount Corsair paid for EpocCam has not been specified.
