Pre-orders for the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset have reached five times the number of orders for the original Quest, according to Facebook. During the company's Q3 earnings call (via UploadVR), CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the popularity of the company's latest virtual reality standalone device.

"We launched Quest 2," CEO Zuckerberg said during the call (via Seeking Alpha). We've worked hard to make it more accessible to more people so they can feel as if they're with other people or in other places."

"Lighter, faster, crisper screen, and a new price point of only $300. Pre-orders have exceeded our expectations, exceeding pre-orders for the original Quest by more than five times."

But the Quest 2 headset was not without controversy. Shortly before its release, Facebook announced that it would require a Facebook account to log into the Oculus service and access the device. This decision meant that the Quest 2 was no longer an option for those who had distanced themselves from Facebook.

Researchers are already working on bypassing the login, and some have already done so successfully.

Despite the impact it may have had on sales of standalone VR headsets, Facebook says the headsets are selling "better than expected." The headset costs $299 (64GB model), much cheaper than competing options, many of which require a fairly powerful gaming PC to operate.
