HyperX Launches Affordable, Compact USB Microphone for Streamers

Some of the best microphones for streaming, such as the Blue Yeti X ($170) and the Elgato Wave 3 ($160), exceed $100. HyperX's new SoloCast, on the other hand, falls into this category with an MSRP of $60.

Generally speaking, mics in this price range offer streamers something better than what you'll find in the clearance bin at K-Mart. That is SoloCast's hope.

We haven't tested this product yet, but at least on paper, it looks like a promising mic at this price. [It's a USB mic that works with PC, Mac, and PS4 (a USB-C to USB-A cable is included). It is also certified on Discord and TeamSpeak, and is said to work well on popular streaming platforms like OBS and XSplit.

Some specs at a glance:

Higher-end (and pricier) microphones generally offer more polar patterns, including stereo, omnidirectional, and bidirectional. However, for solo streaming and podcasting, cardioid is usually the best choice because it captures sound head-on.

Also, a single polar pattern allows for a more compact design.

"SoloCast's small size and swivel stand with adjustable tilt allow it to be placed in tight spaces, such as under monitors. The included mounting adapter accommodates both 3/8" and 5/8" screw sizes and is compatible with most stands and boom arms," HyperX explains.

The adjustable stand is a nice touch for a low-cost microphone. There is also a tap-to-mute control on top and an LED status indicator on the front that tells you if you are on the air.

We also recommend waiting for a review; SoloCast is available now.
