New firmware to fix flicker problem on Samsung G7 Odyssey monitors

A firmware update for the Samsung G7 Odyssey gaming monitor appears to fix a stuttering issue that has been reported by some users since its launch. The firmware was found on the r/Monitors subreddit and, according to anecdotal reports, appears to solve the problem for those suffering from the glitch.

The Samsung G7, a 240Hz high-end gaming monitor, supports both AMD and Nvidia variable refresh rate (VRR) systems: the AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync. In theory, these should ensure that there are few on-screen artifacts when gaming at high refresh rates.

However, early reports from purchasers indicated that some units flicker when VRR is turned on; some reviews, such as TFTCentral's, indicated no flickering, while others, such as DigitalTrends', indicated flickering. Some reviews said they did not experience flickering, such as TFTCentral, while others said they did, such as DigitalTrends, and not all units had this problem.

Thankfully, an effective solution appears to have been deployed: a new firmware found on Reddit, version 1009.3, appears to fix the reported problem for those who suffered until today.

The new firmware allows for a new option in the settings, and Reddit user finch20046 reports that once enabled, it appears to have fixed the reported flickering problem.

Several other users have also reported that this fix has resolved their issues.

We are still relying on anecdotal reports of this fix and will have to wait to see if this is a universal patch, but it seems promising since the firmware has only been available for a short time.

If you are experiencing flickering, new firmware is reportedly available on the Samsung US website. The new firmware, ver. 1009.3, can be downloaded from Samsung US's website here.
