Star Wars: Squadrons" Patch Targets Ranks, Bombers, and Broken Matchmaking

"Star Wars: Squadrons" is a ridiculous dogfighting game, but its deadliest enemies are neither Imperial aces nor Rebel smugglers. Instead, there were problems with matchmaking, and the fleets were slowly being wiped out.

Hopefully, today's 2.0 update will end that too.

The centerpiece of today's update is a new "forfeit" system, which will replace the "safe to leave" and "match not scored" qualifiers that previously affected abandoned games. If you win a game, you now always get the full reward, regardless of how many opponents have abandoned. A loss after a teammate abandons (chooses to lose or forfeit the match) will count as a loss, but you will lose significantly fewer skill points for doing so.

Ranked match lobbies will now also backfill if someone is eliminated during the pregame briefing. Players who drop out during this phase (whether by choice or disconnection) will lose a few skill points, but will not be counted as a withdrawal or loss.

"Overall, we hope these changes mean that players will play full games more often," EA wrote.

There is also a bit more housekeeping in today's update. One particularly nasty bug breaks ranked scores, which remain permanently at zero regardless of performance. With today's update, you can reset your rank only once per operation (season). You will have to redo your ranking, but at least more matches should count towards its completion.

Back in space, the motives are aimed at the somewhat more powerful TIE bombers. Many pilots were beginning to realize that they could park their TIE Bombers under enemy capitol ships, overloading their subsystems and preventing them from turrets. As a result, hull strength was dramatically reduced and the Capitol turrets became more and more fearsome as they approached slowly or out of phase.

The patch notes contain a good list of small changes, my personal favorite being the addition of an obstacle course to the game's practice mode. As a nice bonus, you can get 1200 Glory in your wallet, enough to buy one Legendary Cosmetics for Rebels or Space Fascists.

The matchmaking bug has been fixed, eliminating much of the frustration of not being able to return to the cockpit. Still, it is a bit depressing to learn that there are no plans to grow Squadrons any further than it is now.
