Apex Legends went from "zero to nearly $1 billion" in just two years, EA says

Apex Legends is free to play, but it is also one of Electronic Arts' biggest earners. The company said in its Q2 2021 earnings report today that revenue rose 24% year over year and is expected to bring in more than $500 million for the year.

"We started the year expecting Apex Legends to achieve net bookings of $300 to $400 million," EA Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen said on an investor conference call, "Apex Legends is now over $500 million Blake Jorgensen, EA's chief financial officer, said during an investor conference call. That means Apex will go from zero to nearly $1 billion in lifetime net sales in just two years. With this speed and the addition of mobile, we believe Apex has the potential to grow to $1 billion in net bookings annually.

CEO Andrew Wilson added that with the launch of Season 7 of Apex Legends and the game's distribution on Steam, "we expect this to be the biggest launch date since the product launched." The game is now firmly entrenched in Steam's top 10 games, with more than 82,000 concurrent players at its peak.

"Steam's performance in the first 12 hours was very strong. The new Champion Edition is already one of the top 3 bestsellers on Steam, and we've seen the most Twitch views since launch. It is the incredible inspiration and ability of our team to continue to deliver great gaming experiences and content in the face of these ongoing challenges."

Unfortunately, "Apex" Season 7 has gotten off to a bit of a rough start from a player's perspective: developer Respawn Entertainment made some changes to "streamline" the battle path system, but that has slowed the progression quite a few players have complained that it has slowed down progress.
