The new version is not a full remake: BioWare says it aims to "modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original films in the best way possible."
"As game developers, we always hope that our games transcend the original platform, and the opportunity to remaster the trilogy means that the fruits of our decade of work will live on and be experienced better and clearer than ever before better and clearer than ever before," wrote Casey Hudson, GM of BioWare.
"Mass Effect: Mass Effect: Legendary Edition" will include basic single-player content and DLC from "Mass Effect," "Mass Effect 2" and "Mass Effect 3," plus promo weapons, armor and packs.
The game will also include a number of new content.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will be released in Spring 2021. More details will be revealed next year.
BioWare also stated that a new Mass Effect is in development, but no specifics were given.
News of a remaster is no surprise; the rumor machine started turning in May when Electronic Arts announced that it would release "additional EA HD titles" by the end of March 2021, among other things. This claim was not verified, but the site was confident enough to state it as fact.
Then in October, a rating for a title called "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" was posted by the Korean Game Rating Administration Board. In addition, earlier this week, Commander Shepard voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meir tweeted that a "special panel" of voice actors from the original trilogy would be held in honor of "N7 Day" on November 7.
And in this week's Q2 2021 earnings report, Electronic Arts reaffirmed its plans to "announce release dates for additional titles in FY21, including EA Originals titles and remastered titles."
