Call of Duty: Warzone adds private matches, introduces texture streaming on PC

A new patch for Call of Duty: Warzone has been released, fixing a bug that caused helicopters to spin and float in the air when progressing in Survival, and introducing an option to host private matches. The PC version also added a somewhat surprising new feature: texture streaming. This means that Warzone will have a smaller install size in the future, but will be able to incorporate high-resolution operators and weapon skins as needed.

Below is the full release notes. Private Warzone matches are in beta and are described as having three options: 50-player battle royale, 30-player loot, and 24-player mini-BR.

Texture streaming will only apply to players with the texture resolution set to high. Activision's site has a dedicated blog on the feature, which explains that "[this] update will be released with the Operator and Weapon texture resolutions slightly lowered by default."

"[Texture Streaming] was developed to reduce the overall game package size by removing certain textures that players rarely use or encounter. When a player encounters an Operator or Weapon that uses high-resolution textures, they are streamed to the PC cache as needed.

"You can control bandwidth usage from the options menu and set a daily limit. However, even with this flexibility, the impact on bandwidth should not be felt when texture streaming is enabled."

The only element of confusion is that Activision says that texture streaming can be turned off if it is not needed. However, "If you set the texture resolution to high and turn off texture streaming, you will still see high-resolution textures on other assets in the game. In other words, operators and weapons will not display high-resolution textures. Again, players with settings set to "medium" or "low" will not be affected by texture streaming at all.
