Destiny 2's next expansion, "The Witch Queen," will not release destinations

Destiny 2's expansion, Beyond Light, launches today, and with it comes a number of changes: four of Destiny's planets will be "vaulted," effectively removing them from the game. Instead, not only Europa, a new zone in Beyond Light, but also the Cosmodrome, the first place players visited in the original Destiny, will return.

When the Content Vault was announced, one of Bungie's selling points was that it would not just be removed, but re-added, including content from Destiny 1. This and the announcement of the Cosmodrome's return led to speculation that each of the three upcoming expansions, Beyond Light, Witch Queen, and Lightfall, would also unvoort old objectives. However, Destiny 2 creative director Luke Smith told PC Gamer in a recent interview that this is not necessarily the case.

"Each expansion will include entirely new destinations," Smith said.

Smith further explains that Bungie does not want to bring back destinations unchanged. Instead, it needs to reflect the current state of the game." In order to unvault a Destination, it must be updated to the latest context of the universe.

Bungie is also repackaging and modernizing Destiny 1's Will of Crota strike, which takes place in the Cosmodrome, but Smith notes that there is a difference between the two types of content: "Destinations are part of Destiny's ongoing narrative and strikes are more of a game element. Bringing back the hugely popular Destiny 1 strikes means bringing back something great and fun and replayable to the game. To bring back Destinations is to see its context in the Destiny 2 storyline."

To be honest, I had hoped to revisit the Dreadnought for The Witch Queen. With the focus of this expansion on Savatoon, one of the Hive's three main leaders, a return to her brother's ship seemed like a sure bet. Unfortunately, that will not happen. Nevertheless, we do know that there will be others besides Strike who will leave the vaults in the future, and at some point in the fourth year - before the release of Witch Queen - the Vault of Glass raid will be revived.
