Spelunky 2" Patch Buffs Golden Boss, Nerfs Golden Parachute

"Spelunky 2" is a roguelike about unexpected interactions between characters and objects. At least, that's what I tell myself when an angry shopkeeper with a horned lizard ping pong ball destroys my jetpack with a shotgun. The latest small update, 1.16.0, seems to be aimed primarily at cleaning up unexpected interactions between people and things in Spelunky, but a few larger changes lurk in the notes.

Let the fun begin:

Glad to see Golden Parachute finally nerfed. Disgraced CEOs.

Some other tweaks are meaningful too, like the re-working of the Spark Trap hitbox. Jetpack flames now interact with some entities. What are those? Is this another secret inserted into the game or a meaningful adjustment to nerf a valuable item? Jetpacks are a staple item for high level players because they can be easily backtracked, just like the Spelunky in the previous version. If the jetpack's blast ignites something new, then players may be deviating from the habits they have developed.

Otherwise, Olmec continues to be one of the most changed things in the game since launch, and this patch follows the rather dramatic changes of 1.15.0 with further adjustments to the boss fight against the floating golden head:

Derek Yu and other of his team members clearly want players to engage more with the golden god. One of the early shortcuts had the player idling on a ladder while Olmec spits out endless bombs in stage 2, which makes it easier to practically ignore the boss in the second phase and wait for him to push down to the lava layer below it. This should make Olmec more of an obstacle and a fitting last boss for the previous Spelunky.

XanaGear, one of Spelunky 2's top players, discusses the update along with the full patch notes.
