Roblox users borrowed the ubiquitous "ugh" sound from the obscure action game Messiah.

Roblox is a sandbox game creation tool that is apparently played by "more than half" of the children in the United States. As with any huge platform for user-generated content, most of its users do not know (or care) about copyright, but it is still surprising that the sound of the obscure 2000 action game "Messiah" became one of Roblox's most iconic sounds It is.

Roblox's "oof" can be sampled here, and the original Messiah can be heard here. Tommy Tallarico, CEO of Intellivision Entertainment, the creator of this sound, stumbled upon it last year.

"I am honored that something I created 20 years ago has become so iconic and part of pop culture," he wrote on Twitter. 'Just needs a fair payoff, and it's not cheap.')

Now, more than a year later, VentureBeat reports that the dispute is over. Soon, the sound will be replaced by a new audio track, and there will be a licensing fee of $1 (or 100 Robux) to use "oof" in Roblox's work. It remains to be seen if the user base's love of "oof" will grow and if royalties will actually be paid.

But there is more: Tallarico will soon release an Intellivision Amico console, which will allow him to sell "oof" merchandise on Roblox's Amazon store. Not only that, Tallarico has created four sound libraries for Roblox (costing from $10 to $250).

In other recent Roblox news, Lil Nas X will perform an in-game concert on Friday the 13th.
