Destiny 2: Beyond Light Patch Notes Released

Destiny 2's major expansion "Beyond Light" was released today, and it's time for a very long patch note, technically and officially known as Destiny 2 Update 3.0.0: The "Orb of Light" is now the "Orb of Power," the login screen and full-screen menu backgrounds will darken, a new vendor will appear in the tower, and the "Mountain Top" among other apex weapons will be nerfed significantly. That last development made our own Destinysmith, Tim Clark, quite sad, although he acknowledged that it was probably necessary.

"Given how strong Mountain Top and a few other pinnacles were, it's no wonder Bungie gave up trying to balance them," he recently wrote in an ode to defanged grenade launchers. Instead, Beyond Light has implemented a system whereby legendary weapons "sunset" based on the season in which they were released.

"Regardless, 'Destiny' is at its best when the sandbox surprises players and makes them think about loadouts and encounters in different ways. In a game that is essentially about chasing loot, I mourn the death of the Pinnacles. Fundamentally, they were cool."

We also recently spoke with Luke Smith, creative director of Bungie 2, about why "Destiny 2" and what Bungie can (and can't) do to carry it into the future.
