Reading, England, man gets Venom Snake prosthetic hand

One of the great attractions of Hideo Kojima fans is his blurring of the line between fiction and the real world. The Internet and "MGS2," Guantanamo and "Ground Zeroes," or the real-life doctor who attempted to perform the world's first head transplant, were once caught in the middle of a conspiracy in "The Phantom Pain. These games mirror our own times, sometimes under the guise of coincidence, and again and again they sneak into our reality.

Konami has now partnered with prosthetic manufacturer Open Bionics to "release the official Metal Gear Solid bionic arm for below-the-elbow amputees, Venom Snake. This striking new design can be attached to Open Bionics' "Hero Arm," the world's most affordable multi-grip bionic arm. [Daniel Melville, a 29-year-old who was born without a right hand and has worn the Hero Arm for over three years, is the first recipient of the new Metal Gear Solid design. Daniel, who lives in Reading, England, said, "I can't believe it. It's everything I've ever wanted in a bionic arm. I'm an avid gamer and I love Metal Gear Solid, but to actually be able to get Snake's arm is insane."

Unfortunately, the Open Bionics Hero Arms do not have a stun punch feature, but each is custom made and can be accessorized with magnetic clip-on covers. This is not the first time Metal Gear Solid and Bionics have crossed over. A few years ago, Konami was also involved in an effort to create a prosthetic limb for James, who was seriously injured in an unforeseen train accident; the BBC produced a documentary at the time called "Metal Gear Man," which can be viewed below.

Samantha Payne, co-founder of Open Bionics, said, "This collaboration was born out of a mutual understanding of art, science, and technology. It is pure joy to see this work of engineering and art impact people's lives." The Venom Snake cover is available for sale on the Open Bionics website.
