Nvidia can't possibly be preparing an RTX 3060 with more VRAM than an RTX 3080, can they?

Earlier today, rumors surfaced of an RTX 3060 graphics card with 12GB of GDDR6 memory - 12GB, more than the Nvidia RTX 3070 and more capacity than the RTX 3080's 10GB of GDDR6X. So what do you think?

The first rumor comes from the website MyDrivers, which claims that the new RTX 3060 was originally only going to have 6GB of memory, but seems to have been scrapped to dodge AMD's RX 6000 series and 16GB memory wipeout.

That article also states that the RTX 3080 only has 8GB of memory, which is incorrect; the RTX 3080 actually has 10GB of GDDR6X. Perhaps this has something to do with Google's translation from native Chinese. Regardless, the RTX 3060's purported specifications would exceed it in raw capacity.

And that is why I was not convinced of the validity of this report. Between the strange memory configuration and the error, it was a bit disconcerting. [But between then and now, VideoCardz was able to confirm an update to Nvidia's roadmap. This may mean that two memory configurations will appear on the card, as in the case of the GTX 1060 (which comes in 3GB and 6GB models), but nothing concrete is known yet.

It has been suggested that the RTX 3060, RTX 3050 Ti, RTX 3050, and RTX 3080 Ti could all appear in January, marking the second major Ampere graphics card push since the high-end RTX 3090, RTX 3080, and RTX 3070 in the past two months. This will be a push.

If GPU smorgasbords aren't enough, don't forget that there is growing evidence that the RTX 3060 Ti will be available during the holidays.

The RTX 3060 will likely utilize an as-yet-unseen GA106 GPU, as the RTX 3050 Ti is said to feature, while the upcoming RTX 3060 Ti is rumored to feature the GA104 GPU of the RTX 3070 The RTX 3050 will feature a GA107 chip will join this fray.

The RTX 3060 Ti model is also said to launch with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, actually less than the RTX 3060 with 12GB.

Just thinking about Nvidia's rumored roadmap makes my head spin. Before a single card is announced, we're talking about a card that will be cannibalized from the rest of the cards.

Nvidia's RTX 30 series is getting denser and denser, and the rumors make it look more and more like a scattershot response to AMD's RX 6000 series every day. Perhaps this is a sign that the potential gaming orientation of AMD's RDNA 2 GPUs is surprising the green team, and Nvidia's explosive response is definitely needed to gain an edge in the battle for gamers' hearts and minds. Otherwise, why would we hear so many conflicting reports?

Perhaps it is because at this point these are just rumors, and anything that is supposed to be announced by Nvidia is far from conclusive evidence that such a card will one day hit store shelves; nor is there any evidence that Nvidia is working on such a design; nor is there any evidence that Nvidia has any plans for such a card. [At the very least, there is no doubt that something is coming out of the green team, and that it has something to do with AMD's RDNA 2 graphics card.

I will err on the side of caution regarding this rumor until further notice.
