According to reports, Intel could have bought OpenAI for $1 billion seven years ago, but the CEO at the time thought it would not pay off.

Look, we've all missed some great opportunities in life. No hindsight is 20/20. That said, it seems that Intel has made more than a few mistakes regarding its “long-term vision” over the past decade or so.

According to Reuters, four sources revealed that in the months between 2017 and 2018, Intel executives discussed various options for working with OpenAI, including purchasing a 15% stake in OpenAI for $1 billion

Also discussed were the possibility of a “buyout” of OpenAI for $1 billion.

Two of the sources also stated that the discussions included the possibility of Intel acquiring another 15% stake in OpenAI if Intel offered OpenAI hardware at cost.

Sources told Reuters that then-CEO Bob Swan did not believe the generative AI model would be on the market in the near future, at least not within Intel's desired time frame, and that the investment would not pay off.

Given that the market value of OpenAII is currently estimated to be around $80 billion, that investment is now worth about $12 billion, not to mention that Intel is at the forefront of generative AI development.
