The worldwide box office for Borderlands was $16 million, about $60 million away from breaking even.

The movie “Borderlands,” as I wrote yesterday, continues to be a bit of a sad doozy in an overly dramatic fashion - $8.8 million at the U.S. box office, not even close to the $115 million production cost and $30 million in sales and distribution costs, according to Variety.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that the worldwide box office has been released and, um, it's not looking much better. The worldwide box office for Borderlands was $16.5 million.

As an exercise, let's do some ad hoc calculations to see how much Lionsgate would need to break even. Combining production and marketing/distribution costs, the film will cost $145 million to produce. The studio claims that 60% of the production cost, or $69 million, was covered by presales. Add $16.5 million to this, and the total is $85.5 million. The remaining $59.5 million must be raised.

However, it is even worse than that. Box office figures are calculated before theaters get their money, and the cut can range from 20% to 50%, depending on many factors, including theaters and studios (larger productions often earn studios more money, smaller theaters often get a worse deal, etc.).

While it is difficult to call an exact figure for what goes into the studios' pockets, one can reasonably say that Lionsgate (in the most optimistic scenario) is looking at about two-thirds of that.

For Gearbox and Take-Two Interactive, there is no impact at all in terms of how this will affect the actual “Borderlands” franchise; in an interview with IGN, Take-Two's CEO said, “The film's performance will not affect us or franchise financially,” he stressed.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, posting sternly through it, confirmed this doubly on Twitter: “All the money spent on this film was paid for by the film studio Lionsgate,” Pitchford wrote, and went on to He began:

“We are working on the game and are very happy that so many people know things about ‘Borderlands’ that they didn't know before. We're excited that some of the best actors and filmmakers on the planet think our game is better than what they did in the movie! You've seen the movie, right?

To be fair to Pitchford, statistically speaking, many of those who are dumbed down have likely not seen the movie. However, PC Gamer news writer Joshua Warrens did see the movie, and he didn't like it.
