AMD may raise the TDP of the Ryzen 9600X and 9700X significantly after launch in the name of pursuing higher performance.

The trials and tribulations that the CPU market is now facing... Between the stability problems of Intel CPUs and the poor performance of AMD CPUs, it may seem that there is terribly little room for optimism. However, the rumors continue to abound, with reports of possible further changes to AMD's mid-range 9000 series chips.

According to tech leaker chi11eddog, the newly released AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will have their TDP raised to 105W. This change is rumored to be pushed in the AGESA 1.2.0.1a Patch A BIOS update.

Both of these Zen 5 CPUs launched with TDPs as low as 65W, with many reviews noting their power efficiency and heat lightness. Unfortunately, the performance gains over the equivalent previous generation Ryzen CPUs were marginal, and there was much talk of a “Zen 5%”. Given that the price at launch is much higher than the current price of the Ryzen 7000 series chips it succeeds, it is no surprise that it has not sold off the shelves.

The 9600X and 9700X do not appear to be chips with improved performance in their current state. Instead, they feel like they were shipped in default eco mode when they could have been configured to consume more power and generate more frames, and we PC Gamer Hardware Den are not alone.
