Bungie has good news and bad news for Destiny 2 players: the good news is that the studio has figured out why “many” player names are randomly changed by the automated moderation tool, but the bad news is that it will take time to fix The bad news is that it's going to take time to fix.

The problem first came to light when players started reporting that their names had been changed for no reason; Bungie changes the names of players who violate its naming policy: names are put through a “character filtering and offensive terms moderation system” and those deemed to be in violation of the rules will be changed to ”Guardian [random number].”

Some of the players whose names were changed said that they were initially told by moderators on Reddit that their handles must be in violation of some policy, but the sheer scale and randomness of the problem made that seem unlikely. Then yesterday, Bungie admitted that somewhere something had gone terribly wrong.

“We are tracking the issue of numerous account names being changed by Bungie's name modification tool. The drastic layoffs, which come less than a year after the previous round of layoffs that left a number of prominent employees unemployed, have angered “Destiny 2” fans who have become increasingly frustrated with Bungie's freewheeling practices. “When you lay off a lot of QA staff, it turns out that the game you are making We've found that it makes it easier to have quality problems,” Clark wrote last week, and while these problems may not be a direct result of the layoffs, they are a growing sentiment among the ‘Destiny’ community.

To throw some kind of a breakthrough to players, the studio announced that the game's alien traveling salesman, Xûr, will begin selling coveted exotic class items this weekend: “Xûr's exotic class item is 41 Strange Coins Xûr's Exotic Class Items are 41 Strange Coins and have a random roll. If not offered, an Exotic Cypher will be offered instead, which costs 79 Strange Coins and is limited to one per account.
