Arm reportedly preparing massive new GPU architecture to compete with Nvidia

Arm is working on a new GPU design and has a target to beat Nvidia. This is a rather exaggerated claim, but it is true, as reported by Israeli business website Globes.

Arm reportedly employs up to 100 GPU engineers at its development center in Ra'anana, Israel. What is not clear, however, is what kind of graphics architecture they are tasked with building, with the two obvious choices being for video rendering or AI training and reasoning.

Arm already has several GPU designs, including the Mali and Immortalis series, which are typically available as IP that chipmakers can license; Arm itself is not in the business of manufacturing and selling GPUs; it is in the business of building and selling CPUs. That is also true for CPUs, which are the mainstay of the chip design licensing business.

However, the Mali and Immortalis series are fairly traditional graphics units, intended to actually process graphics. This is a whole different ball game than building a GPU to handle AI. [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...]
