Diablo's original and best version can be played in your browser (again).

Browser Diablo has been in vogue for a while now and we wrote about an earlier version back in 2019. That version has unfortunately been offline recently, but another one has taken over my browser as if someone had stuffed a soulstone in my forehead, Diablo source code rebuilt by GalaXyHaXz and the devilution team, ported to WebAssembly and live again via Github.

My colleagues at PC Gamer are divided between Diablo 4 disease patients and Diablo 2 enjoyers, and I'm here to tell you that they are both wrong. Diablo 4 may have improved greatly thanks to the post-launch season updates, but it still can't compare to the original in terms of atmosphere or condensed simplicity.

All you need is one dungeon and one town, no open-world tininess. Being alone, layered beneath a tristram, listening to goat-like bleating somewhere in the dark where no lights reach, is the ultimate Diablo experience, and nothing compares to any of the sequels.

To play Diablo in your browser, you must first upload the DIABDAT.MPQ file; if you have Diablo via GOG, you will already have access to this file, but if not, the shareware MPQ is already loaded [...] [...] [...] [...] [...]
