FDA approved Traumagel, a wound healing gel with “hummus-like color and texture.

As Fast Company reported, last Wednesday the FDA granted medical device approval to a product called Traumagel. But instead of a camo-green cylindrical canister, it comes in a plastic dispenser that looks like a stimpak and is “a 30-ml syringe of an algae- and fungus-based hemostatic gel with a hummus-like color and texture. [The trauma gel was developed for severe bleeding, such as occurs after a gunshot wound, which would otherwise be treated with chemical coagulant-soaked gauze, products like Quick Clot, or old-fashioned instant glue like in an episode of “Poker Face.”

“If you have a roll of gauze, you have to stuff a little bit of it into the bullet wound to make sure it comes in contact with whatever is bleeding,” says Joe Landolina of Cresilon, founder of Traumagel. It's painful for the patient and dangerous for EMTs and paramedics because they are exposed to shrapnel and bone fragments.” [Traumagel] gets it where it needs to go.”

Traumagel was used on injured animals under the name “Vetigel” before it was approved for use on humans. If it is good enough for cats, it is good enough for you. [...] [...] [...] [...] [...]
