Warner Bros. executives miss the glory days of "Hogwarts Legacy" as "Suicide Squad" slumps, game revenue plummets 41%.

Rocksteady has made some excellent games in the past, so I honestly feel a little bad for the lead performance of Suicide Squad: Go Justice League! However, you won't feel as bad as Warner Bros. just announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2024, and the news on gaming revenues is not so good.

Specifically, gaming revenues are down an eye-popping 41% compared to Q2 2023. The reason is Rocksteady's unlucky baby. The main reason for the decline is the poor performance of "Suicide Squad:" Warner executives said, "This year, 'Take down the Justice League! was the main reason for the weak performance," adding that "the blemish is all the more painful considering the strong performance of 'The Hogwarts Legacy' the previous year."

I imagine the Rocksteady folks had their knives twisted a bit when Warner bosses compared "Suicide Squad" to the golden age of the Potterverse, but this news is really no surprise. It was discovered a few months ago that Warner lost a whopping $200 million as a result of the more than 10 years "Suicide Squad" spent in development. This is $25 million more than the film cost to produce in 2016. With that in mind, a 41% drop may not be so bad. Comparatively.

There is one more bullet point on my list of reasons why I think "Suicide Squad" may not be long for this world. I'm not saying that willingly: as I said earlier, the folks at Rocksteady have made a great game, and I'd be happy if "Suicide Squad" miraculously turned around and built on the "flashes of greatness" that our own Morgan Park highlighted in his "Suicide Squad" review. I'd be happy if "Suicide Squad" miraculously turned around, building on the "flashes of greatness" that our own Morgan Park highlighted in his review of "Kill the Justice League". But such an outcome will not be tolerated for long, especially with the game's current surprisingly low player count.

Still, the game's second season has just begun, and the gangs are beginning to revive the Justice League, not fully understanding their mission. Perhaps in the next couple of seasons something will catch fire (uh, in a good way) and justify Rocksteady's commitment. But I wouldn't bet against it.
