Arrowhead Boss Says He's Not Upset by Latest "Hell Diver 2" Balance Fiasco: "I'll Take This Any Day Over Nobody Caring

Hell Diver 2 players have done it again: Arrowhead nerfed the fan favorite Flamethrower in the recent Escalation of Freedom patch, and the community didn't take it well. But in the eyes of Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani, it was worse. [Jorjani recently said while chatting with fans on the Helldivers Discord, "For the record, I don't have anything. I want to be clear, I don't have a problem with what's going on." We just want people to tell us what they like and what they don't."

"What do you like?

"What's happening now," as Giorgiani put it, is a pretty fierce blowback against the nerfing of the flamethrower, which drastically reduced its effectiveness against chargers; as PCG diver Morgan Park pointed out yesterday, before the nerf, flamethrowers were "a lot more effective in combat when you and your teammates are powerful enough to justify the risk of getting burned," and was a viable option as a support weapon. That is no longer the case, leading to an uproar on Reddit and Discord and, as usual, a flood of negative user reviews on Steam.

Some of the complaints are no doubt a rekindling of the unhappiness that followed the anger over the balance changes in Helldivers 2 in June and the meltdown over plans to require a PSN account to play in May. In short, while the nerf itself does not seem to warrant such a reaction, one change to just one weapon, one could argue that the "Helldivers" community is now a bit nervous about these things.

But while it is clear that some players are unhappy, the majority are not being abusive. 'People are very vocal right now, but I have no problem with that,' he writes. 'People are being very civil and making excellent points on multiple topics.'

Jorjani said that striking a balance to ensure that Helldivers 2 is "fun" is easier said than done, because "fun is subjective to different people." He also said that Arrowhead needs to do a better job of "accommodating different play styles" and communicating its intentions to players.

He also stressed that despite what some players may think, Arrowhead is sincere in its efforts to make "Helldivers 2" the best game it can be.

"After all, there is not one wizard behind the scenes pulling all the strings. 'Obviously our intention is to move the needle in the direction where every patch is more correct. But that doesn't mean we aren't working in good faith or that we will stop, it just means that we are human and sometimes we fall short."
