Doom Eternal's new official mod support includes "the exact same tools" used to create the game.

It took more than four years, but the official mod tools for id Software's latest installment in its long-running shooter series, Doom Eternal, are now available on Steam.

Mods for Doom Eternal already exist and can be viewed in piles on sites like NexusMods. However, with the addition of official mod support and access to the new "Doom Eternal: idStudio" toolset, it is now possible to create much more complex mods than before, and the process of sharing mods through the new in-game mod browser is simplified

"This is expected to simplify the process of sharing mods through the new in-game mod browser.

"This will allow players to view, download, and play mods published by their creators," said id Software's Marty Stratton in his opening remarks at QuakeCon 2024. For creators, the portal will also serve as a hub for managing and publishing mods. And the idStudio beta provides Steam creators with the exact same tools they used to build Doom Eternal.

The new mod tools announced at QuakeCon are "pro-level tools and definitely take time to learn," Hugo Martin added.

Yeah, it looks a bit complicated.

I thought you might be unhappy with the fact that Doom Eternal's mod support will be through the new launcher rather than the Steam Workshop, but that doesn't seem to be the case. id Software is also providing a mod for Doom Eternal's Windows Store version. It makes sense, given that the browser will be provided (id is a Microsoft company, after all), and fans generally seem to be too excited about the possibilities opened up by these new tools to worry too much about the details of distribution.

Doom Eternal's new mod support is currently available on Steam and will soon be available on the Microsoft Store, but the idStudio tools themselves are only available on Steam, as detailed in the Doom Eternal modding FAQ to participate in the mod preview, you must right-click Doom Eternal in the Steam library, select "Properties", select the "Beta" tab, and select "pc-mod-preview" from the drop-down menu. Close everything, the game will update and you are ready to go.
