Leak of "Legacy of Cain: Soul Reaver" remaster?

A remaster of the "Legacy of Cain: Soul Reaver" series may be in the works. The possibility of a leak surfaced at last week's Comic-Con in San Diego.

First spotted at Resetera were two statues depicting Soul Reaver protagonist Raziel fighting his nemesis Cain, unveiled at the Dark Horse booth. Next to each statue was a small placard with the brand name and logo "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver I & II Remastered," indicating the upcoming remastering of the cult favorite Crystal Dynamics series.

According to GameSpot, the placard was removed from the booth display when the possibility of a remaster began to spread online. Randy Lerman, vice president of product development and sales at Dark Horse, said the statue would be available in August, but would not comment on the game itself.

The Soul Reaver games, in which Raziel, a vampire-turned-vengeful wraith, goes on an adventure to rid himself of his former master, Cain, are still beloved more than 20 years later.Soul Reaver 1 and 2 writer and creative director Amy Hennig would go on to take on the creative direction of Uncharted at Naughty Dog.

The remastering of Soul Reaver 1 and 2 remains unconfirmed by Crystal Dynamics, but not entirely unexpected, despite the series being in purgatory for over 20 years. In its final financial report for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, shortly after acquiring the studio, Embracer said it saw "great potential" for "remakes, remasters, spin-offs, and transmedia projects" in its IP catalog. Later in 2022, Crystal Dynamics released a survey (via Video Games Chronicle) to gauge interest in a "Legacy of Kain" remaster, receiving over 100,000 responses.
