Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said that the fantasy-themed spin-off of the "Borderlands" series, "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands," was a "huge success" and that it is reasonable for fans to expect more from the series in the future. Pitchford's comments coincide with what Gearbox said at the time of the "Wonderlands" launch that it could build a "new franchise" in the fantasy series.
"What we showed with the first 'Wonderlands' is that there is something there. In an interview with GamesRadar+ during San Diego Comic-Con, Pitchford said, "It was a huge success and exceeded our expectations."
"The first 'Wonderlands' game did bigger than the first 'Borderlands' game."
Pitchford was also clear that both he and Gearbox's wider studio like fantasy, and given the game's success, "it is reasonable for our fans to expect more there."
Pitchford's comments were echoed just a few years ago when he wrote, " Tiny Tina's Wonderlands," almost echoing what a Take-Two businessperson had said at the time of the game's launch. However, don't expect a sequel anytime soon: Pitchford has just about confirmed that Gearbox's next game will be another installment in the main "Borderlands" series. Nevertheless, since "Wonderlands" is a spin-off in its own right, a pattern will emerge: a "Wonderlands" game will appear shortly after the release of "Borderlands" and use techniques pioneered and established in the "Borderlands" series It may be that.
Gearbox was recently sold to the ailing Embracer Group and is now owned by Take-Two, a former publisher of the company's games, for a purchase price of $460 million. The Borderlands franchise was sold along with Homeworld and Risk of Rain.
Critics enjoyed "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" and gave it so-so reviews, but not rave reviews. For more on this, see PC Gamer's 70% review.
