I got caught up in one word today that almost, but definitely did not fit the clue I had, and made things infinitely more difficult. It made everything else disappear from my mind, including my usual riddle-solving thoughts. When I actually looked at the letters I had on hand, I quickly found the answer.

The sharp pointy end is something to think about today. If you look at a fork (garden or kitchen) or a rake, rather than the end of a handle, you will find a clue. This is also the name of a strategic action on several fronts. There is only one vowel to find today.

There are no double letters in today's puzzle.

Wordle offers five boxes in six columns each day, and you can guess which five-letter word is hidden in each box.

Usually a good plan is to start with a strong word like ALERT or another word with a good mix of common consonants and multiple vowels. You should avoid starting a word with a repeated letter to avoid wasting a chance to check or delete an extra letter; pressing Enter will tell you which letter is right or wrong. If the box goes to ⬛️, it means that the letter is not in the secret word at all. A 🟨 means the letter is in the word but not in that position. 🟩 means that the correct letter is in the correct position.

The second guess should complement the first guess, using another “good” word to cover a common letter that may have been missed in the first line. After that, it is just a matter of using what you have learned to narrow down the correct word. In all, you can try six times, and only actual words can be used. Remember that letters can also be repeated (e.g. BOOKS).

Wordle was originally conceived by software engineer Josh Wardle as a surprise for his partner, who loved word games. From there it spread to his family and was finally released to the public. Since then, the word puzzle game has spawned a slew of Wordle-like games, focusing the daily gimmicks on music, math, and geography, and it wasn't long before Wordle became so popular that it was sold to the New York Times for a seven-figure sum. Indeed, it would only be a matter of time before we would be communicating solely through tricolored boxes.
