I have been gaming solidly for over a year with the Audeze Maxwell and there is no better sounding gaming headset out there.

I have been obsessed with planar magnetic drivers ever since I bought my first Oppo PM-3. However, the “pieces” started coming off the faux leather headband and were relegated to a box in the attic for years. But that's okay, because the Audeze LCD-1 headphones still sound great.

But they are wired, and since I am a lazy audiophile, that means I was constantly switching between the stunning wired sound of the LCD-1s and the actually still quite good wireless sound of Razer's BlackShark V2 Pro. However, to anyone foolish enough to talk audio to me, I always complained that I didn't have a good wireless audiophile alternative.

Until Audeze released the Maxwell headset; there was also the Penrose, but it never reached the sweet spot that Maxwell's stunning sound and versatility brought. I raved about the form and audio in my Audeze Maxwell review over a year ago.

And now, for the first time, I see it discounted to under $299 MSRP. Admittedly, this isn't the most fantastic discount, and it's still a large amount of money for anyone to spend on a gaming headset, but not a large amount to spend on a set of planar magnetic headphones.

Planar magnetic drivers are completely flat, unlike typical dynamic drivers (which are virtually tiny speakers with a cone-shaped diaphragm and magnetizing coils). This produces a wider, more detailed, more natural sound, which to me is ideal for creating the expansive soundscapes required for PC gaming.

However, due to the use of magnets in the drivers, they are heavy; the Maxwell is a fairly hefty headset, and after a really long day of gameplay, you may be content to take the headset off for a while. However, I will miss hearing that gorgeous audio.

I upgraded the faux leather ear cups with memory foam Dekoni Elite Sheepskin pads, which are still quite comfortable on my bones. But they cost $80 on Amazon. They're not on sale today, but the memory foam velour version is. If you're a Prime member, you can get the Elite Velour for $40 on Amazon.
