The First Descendant changes its icon to look exactly like “Destiny 2,” but Nexon will not say how it appeared in the game.

Nexon is currently replacing at least some of the icons from “The First Descendant” with icons from “Destiny 2” that were too close and uncomfortable, but has yet to say anything about how these icons came to be in the game in the first place ...

A quick catch-up: Earlier this month, players of “The First Descendant” noted that some of the in-game icons looked very similar to those used in “Destiny 2.” Some fans speculated that the problem arose because Nexon used an unidentified free icon repository and appeared to be offering icons for commercial use for which they did not actually have rights.

A few days later, Nexon acknowledged the issue, stating in a statement, “We take the concerns raised seriously and have decided to make adjustments to ensure that images that may appear similar clearly reflect the unique identity of our games.”

“May appear similar” is certainly one way to describe a situation where the icons look virtually identical, but at least the issue was addressed. And as part of the 1.0.3 hotfix released today, “some icon images have been updated,” which resolved the issue to some extent.

“The First Descendant is developed with a deep love and respect for various loot shooters, and we take feedback on other similar games very seriously. Through this hotfix, we are trying to reflect the unique identity of “The First Descendant”. We will continue to improve the game for fans of the genre.”

Ironically, this comment is very close to the statement Nexon made when they first promised the icon change and tells us nothing more than we knew at the time. Players will know immediately which icons have been changed, but how they were changed in the first place remains a mystery. Nexon declined to comment beyond the patch notes.

Despite the swiped icon fiasco, “The First Descendant” continues to do quite well; reviews on Steam are still “mixed,” with only 54% of user reviews favorable, but the number of simultaneous players continues to hover above 100,000

Ico.

Besides replacing the icon, this hotfix also includes UI changes, gameplay tweaks, optimizations and bug fixes. The full patch notes are up at tfd.nexon.com.
