To celebrate D&D's 50th anniversary, Royal Mail is selling monster stamps that can be kept in the Mimic's mouth.

Come to think of it, hasn't every letter you receive had its own epic adventure from sender to your doorstep? If that's the case, come up with your own seamless introduction to a story about Dungeons & Dragons stamps.

That's right, Royal Mail is also joining the 50th anniversary of D&D this year and is now taking pre-orders for a limited edition stamp collection featuring new art by iconic fantasy artist Wayne Reynolds. Intended for collectors rather than those actually trying to organize their mail (though perhaps legitimate for that purpose as well), they are available in a variety of options, including a simple set of eight stamps, an enlarged framed portrait, or printed on metal. I particularly like the Treasure Chest stamp book, which, when unfolded, becomes a mimic.

Apparently, Royal Mail tells me that if you hold this stamp under an ultraviolet light, a "special surprise" will appear. Maybe the text of the upcoming new D&D core book will be printed really small in invisible ink. [The art of the various iconic monsters by Reynolds, from the Mind Flayer to the Red Dragon, is really nice, and even those who have moved on to Pathfinder, since he created much of the definitive work for that game and his signature style is as recognizable as ever might be tempted.

This may seem like a very random collaboration, but Royal Mail has actually been doing this for a while now, whether celebrating classic indie games or the 40th anniversary of Warhammer. There must be enough people who fall squarely in the middle of these nerdy Venn diagrams to make it seem like they are the only ones who are actually doing this.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go post a birthday card to the Displacer Beast.
