Capcom announces that the next "Resident Evil" series is in development.

Capcom finally provided us with bits and pieces of information about the next Resident Evil during the Capcom Next Summer 2024 livestream.

"It was really hard to figure out what to do after 'Resident Evil 7. I honestly feel fulfilled." I can't talk about the details yet, but I hope you look forward to the day when I can."

Nakanishi previously served as director of "Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil Revelations" and "Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D" for the Nintendo 3DS, and was a designer on "Resident Evil 5". It's an impressive resume, no doubt, but what excites me more than anything else is the idea that Nakanishi will use "Resident Evil 7" as inspiration for the next installment in the series.

Many players consider "Resident Evil 7" to be the game that saved the troubled series. I don't envy anyone who has to continue with "Resident Evil 4," and while "Resident Evil 5" was far from a dumpster fire, neither "Resident Evil 6" nor "Resident Evil 7" could compare to Leon's adventures in the Spanish countryside.

While "Resident Evil 4" was able to keep a fairly low profile when it came to scares thanks to its great story, protagonist, and action scenes, the following two games really suffered from the shift in focus from horror to action. So when I first stepped inside the gates of the Baker mansion in "Resident Evil 7" and had to endure being chased around the house for hours in a Halloween horror maze, I was morbidly glad that the series had gone back in the direction that scared me.

Aside from the fact that the next installment will be a mainline piece, Nakanishi did not reveal anything more about what the next installment will be like. So for now, all I can do is hope that it will be as scary, if not scarier, than "Resident Evil".

Rumors of Resident Evil 9 have been circulating quite a bit over the past couple of years. The most recent one surfaced a few months ago from a Resident Evil leaker known as Dusk Golem, who claimed it would be an open world game: "Dragon's Dogma 2 extended the capabilities of the RE engine for open world games, and two other games made with this technology Monster Hunter Wild and Resident Evil 9," Dusk Golem tweeted. This probably means that the maps will resemble those of Resident Evil 8.

None of this has been proven yet, so it would be best to just wait and see what the new games will look like when Capcom is ready to share more details about the new games. Unfortunately, this could also mean another long wait, and while it is nice to have such proof, I would have liked to have seen a little more about the next game during the summer gamefest.

What we do know is that as of the end of the "Shadow of Rose" DLC for "Resident Evil 8," Ethan Winters' daughter Rose is ready to embark on a new mission with Chris Redfield, and he is currently employed by Blue Umbrella That's all I know. So it seems likely that we will run into these two again.
