Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail players, side-questers warned: don't solve mysteries for NPCs who leak major last-minute spoilers.

The story of "Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail" is controversial, but I personally find it overall favorable and a half-step above "Stormblood". I do enjoy it, although I do have some criticisms about the overall quality of the dialogue and cut-scene presentation. The side quests, in particular, are a nice break from the sometimes tedious main scenario quests (MSQ).

That's why it's even funnier that I barely dodged a full-blown spoiler at the hands of Square Enix because I was too tired to solve the riddle.

First, let me explain without spoiling anything. When you reach level 95 or so, you will receive a side quest in the game's capital, Turiyoral, called "Once a Riddler, Now a Ruler. You should not do this right away.

In this side quest, no icons appear on the map. Instead, it forces you to find a specific location by solving a riddle; it's a cute little excursion that rewards the player's investment in the story, a departure from the "visit this town and talk to three people" routine common in Dawntrail's MSQ.

What I didn't realize, however, is that this quest literally completely spoil the plot twist right before it. Despite the fact that I'm the kind of person who finishes all the side quests in any zone before moving on, I held off here because, as luck would have it, it was around 12:30 AM and I was in the mood for cutscenes rather than puzzle solving. I finally got around to it after reading a player's warning on the game's subreddit. [Enter the spoiler for Dawntrail's level 95 main scenario quest. Turn back, weary wanderer, if you wish to remain unholy.

So for those of you who don't know the story of this game and are here out of curiosity, here's a brief description. This quest appears just before Wuk Lamat is appointed Dawnservant. Up to this point, we have followed her through the ceremonial succession to the throne. She competes with several others, including her brother, a studious young man named Koana, who has studied abroad and has a passion for all things nerdy.

To cut a long story short, Koana realizes that she is not invested in the culture of the people enough to be worthy of the throne and abandons her bid to help Uk Ramat in one ordeal by throwing a MacGuffin tablet in the air and shooting it. It's a fascinating turn of events.

When addressing the people at the inauguration, Uk Ramat asks Koana to rule by his side as a "vow of reason" and reveals that he has taken a "vow of determination" to emulate the current two-headed king. Koana has certainly improved Tulal with his own inventions. He has also successfully covered the weaknesses of Uk Ramat.

So naturally, the side-quest NPCs, upon completion before the ritual, go ahead and ruin everything, seem to have knowledge of the future, and speak as if Wuk Lamat and Koana already share the throne.

This is a huge mistake, and a downright spoiler, so much so that I'm sure it's a bug that will be addressed in a future patch. However, considering how bad Dawntrail's server problems have been in the past, they have had a fairly stable launch so far. Just be careful where you do your side quests.
