British man walks up to police officer brandishing 6-inch master sword, gets 4 months in jail

In one of the most baffling sentences ever written on this site, a man in Warwickshire, England, was jailed after approaching a police officer while brandishing a master sword.

Anthony Bray, of Nuneaton, was sentenced to four months in jail for "possession of a knife in a public place," according to Warwickshire Police (via Wario64). According to police, Bray was arrested in Nuneaton town center "approaching an officer with a visible object in his hand" and "in possession of a bladed weapon."

The "blade" was, in fact, a sword that sealed the darkness: Link's Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda series. The six-inch blade, housed in a sheath, could be pulled out with the push of a button. Bray's insistence that the gadget was just a plaything did not go over well with Badge, who "tried to explain to Bray that, contrary to its intended purpose, it was actually a sharp, pointed item that could be used as a weapon and might cause others to fear that it might be used against them." It did not pass muster.

Bray was charged at Leamington Spa Magistrates' Court on June 28 and sentenced to four months in prison and a victim surcharge of £154 (about $200).

The West Midlands, of which Nuneaton is a part, has the highest knife crime rate in England and Wales, which may explain why the police took no exception to Bray's master sword. Nevertheless, the police statement seems to admonish Bray for making it clear that he was in possession rather than not having a knife at all. [Sgt. Spellman of the police patrol investigation unit said, "We have zero tolerance for knives in public places and Bray is in violation of this. It is possible to put it out in front of you and not walk down the street. With a little more awareness, Bray could have avoided contact with us altogether."
