Dragon Age: The Veilguard difficulty option lets you turn off death altogether

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the new entry in BioWare's long-running fantasy RPG series, previously had a cooler title, but now it adds combat difficulty options.

A new preview from Game Informer details Veilguard's difficulty options: "Storyteller" is for those who enjoy story, "Adventurer" balances story and combat, and "Nightmare" is a difficulty that needs no explanation. The Storyteller mode and Adventure mode are for those who enjoy storytelling. Players can switch between Storyteller and Adventure modes at will, but since Nightmare mode is permanently selectable, that choice is fraught with danger.

For those who like to tinker, there is also an unbound mode that allows players to individually adjust features such as wayfinding, aim assist, combat timing (to make it easier or harder to parry), enemy health, and the amount of damage enemies inflict. A full auto-aim option is also available, as well as an option to prevent death altogether.

Game director Corinne Busch tells the site that none of these options are cheats: "They are options to allow players of all abilities to appear.

"Git gud" enthusiasts may feel personally attacked, but I think it's a great idea. Accessibility is the primary driver here: the more people we can bring into the game, the better for everyone. But it's also great for players who want to enjoy the game without having to fight to the end. I played "Divinity" in the easiest mode: I played "Original Sin" in the easiest mode because I wanted to explore the world and enjoy the story without having to bother with complicated combat. And when all was said and done, I had no regrets. 'Did I cheat myself out of a complete and proper experience?'

Of course, if you want to get your ass kicked all day by the elven gods and their demonic minions, be my guest. This is a judge-free zone. But not everyone is into that sort of thing.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is due out this fall.
